Los cráneos sobremodelados de Nueva Irlanda (Papua, Nueva Guinea) se asocian a complejas y costosas tradiciones funerarias del sistema ceremonial Malagan, para honrar su memoria y liberar al espíritu mediante la reconstrucción simbólica de su presencia. Los cráneos se exhumaban tras la descomposición inicial y eran recubiertos con arcillas, fibras, conchas y pigmentos naturales.
Esta ceremonia no se realizaba por una única tribu; Nueva Irlanda tiene múltiples grupos lingüísticos y culturales que realizaban esta tradición con diferencias sutiles. Son piezas bastante raras, puesto que muchas esculturas Malagan eran intencionalmente destruidas o abandonadas tras la ceremonia, además la actividad misionera cristiana contribuyó a la desaparición progresiva de estas prácticas en el siglo XX.
